In February 1986 the Spanish Government was ready to pass a law under which the actors would be considered self-employed workers rather than employees of a production company. This meant that the actors would lose many of the labour rights achieved during previous years. That new situation would be beneficial only to production companies - who would be freed from paying social security expenses for their employees - and well-known actors and actresses who, in any case, represented only a small proportion of performing artists. The Spanish actors united in protest. In one of the mass meetings held in those days, a commission was formed to prepare the articles of association required for the formation of an independent trade union that would represent Spanish actors and actresses. That was the birth of the Actors' Union of Madrid.
The official registration took place in June 1986. During 1987, the Federation of Actors of Spain was created in collaboration with the Association of Actors and Directors of Catalonia. During several years, the Federation negotiated the audiovisual trade agreements on a national scale. The Actors' Union of Madrid has since negotiated the trade agreements concerning theatre productions in the region of Madrid.
In 1992 the Union organised its first ceremony to reward the best performances of the previous year. Since then our Actors' Union Awards Ceremony is an annual event.
In 1999 the Union managed to mobilise our professional sector in order to demand a fairer model of tax payment within the Social Security System, achieving a similar level compared to other professional groups.
In 2000 we took part in negotiating the Madrid Dubbing Agreement with the dubbing studios, the Producers and the Regional Government.
In 2003 the Actors' Union of Madrid, along with other cultural organisations, took the lead in raising the Spanish people's awareness of the negative consequences of the Spanish Government's decision to support the invasion of Iraq.
In 2005 the Union started the negotiation of the fifth Theatre Working Agreement of Madrid, which was signed in 2007.
The celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Union in 2006 consisted of several different activities. The main ceremony took place at the Albeniz Theatre with the participation of multi-disciplinary performers in an emotive gala.
One of the most recent achievements of the Union has been the recognition of the status of actors as "creators" in the 2007 Spanish Cinema Law. Other demands are still to be addressed, as we constantly push forward towards new achievements.
